The Earth and the Sky by Treyvina, age 14   The sky, the sky, what do I see in the sky?   Clouds and figures. What do You see along the horizon?   I see trees that are green as a person's eyes.   I see buildings as big as cars and   brown smoke the color of dirt. 		At the Hospital by Brittany, age 15   At the hospital The cleaning ladies are Always mopping the floor And emptying the trash. None of them are Having tea & crumpets Or dancing to disco music Or wearing pink gowns With crinoline skirts. None of them are asking how I'm doing Or filling the bath with bubbles, or turning the shower into a Jacuzzi or the toilets into an ocean. All of the patients are sleeping. None of them are singing silly songs Or pirouetting down the halls Or wearing sparkling, silver wizard cloaks. All of their gowns are green. But here I feel safe and I know the staff is always watching me Through their crystal balls.   close window

		The Special Night by Marcus, age 12   In 1989 breakdancing was about and yellow roses were growing. All outside the heat was heating the grass like a red pepper in a baby's mouth. At the diner Three Sisters Nate and Monique were working. Then their eyes met and there was happiness while the House music was on. So they went out and into the frontroom they were. So they talked the whole night through in an apartment in Chicago.   close window

		La Virgen de Guadelupe by Efrain, age 13 Written in response to a photograph of the Virgin of Guadalupe, Mexico City   This is the village where the virgin is located. She is the one who protects and takes care of us. She is in the middle of the wall that is decorated.   If I was standing in front of her I will thank her for everything she has done with me and my family and also for being in my heart.   Another great wish I will ask her to do is to keep taking care of us and to be always with us.   close window

Ella esta rodeade de una pared decorada.   Si yo estuviera enfrente de la virgen luego me pondria agradecerle por todo lo que ha hecho commigo y con todo mi familia y por estar siempre en mi corazon.   Otro gran deseo que le pidaria es que nos siga cuidado y estando con nosotros para siempre.   close window

	By studying literature and using the medium of writing poetry, children strengthen their basic skills in areas such as spelling, grammar, and vocabulary—all in the hospital. These one-on-one sessions help children accomplish feats they never imagined. Collaboration with community organizations brings instructors from around Chicago, all with unique talents and ideas. Children's writings are collected in mini-anthologies and then given to patients and families. Each long-term patient usually completes a "book" of poems or short stories to take with them upon discharge. These books, at times, contain up to fifty poems by a single child author. Our Creative Writing Workshop's newest project captures the voices of our young writers in a unique audio anthology of original poetry.
